Carol for cans to help out the Bulldog Pantry

Fresno State students will sing to campus departments in exchange for non-perishable food items. The program, ‘Caroling for Cans,’ is being organized through joint efforts of Associated Students, Inc., The Bulldog Pantry and Student Involvement.

Students will start caroling to campus departments at 2:00 p.m. to collect cans, food items, and cash donations to benefit the Bulldog Pantry.  The Bulldog Pantry is a student run food pantry that serves the community surrounding Fresno State.

“We’ll be caroling to different campus offices who have invited us and collecting food items,” explained Alex Andreotti, ASI Executive Vice President. “We’ll also be accepting cash donations.”

In addition to food donations, the Bulldog Pantry receives their supply of food by purchasing items from the Community Food Bank for as little as six cents to the pound. “We can purchase eight cans from the Community Food Bank for the price of one at the supermarket, which helps donations stretch further,” said Jessica Medina, advisor for the Bulldog Pantry.

The concept of a food pantry in the surrounding area came from an extensive need for food in the community.  The Bulldog Pantry opened its doors in November 2007 first serving approximately 20 families.  To date, the Bulldog Pantry helps feed over 175 families.

“It is so exciting to see the support we have gained from the campus community in the two years we’ve been open,” said Medina. “This will be the second year we have done this with ASI and we anticipate receiving more donations.”

Students interested in helping carol for cans will meet in USU 316 at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 4, 2009 to organize into groups.  It is requested that students bring an empty backpack to help carry cans.

Campus departments interested in inviting students to carol for cans at their location must RSVP to Tara Powers-Mead at tpowers@csufresno.edu or by phone at (559) 278-2656. Cash donations will also be accepted.  Checks should be made out to “The Bulldog Pantry/LCM.”

In addition to the Caroling for Cans, there will be a drop-off location available for non-perishable food donations in the Student Involvement office in the University Student Union room 306.

More information about the Bulldog Pantry is available at: http://bulldogpantry.wordpress.com/ or contact Jessica Medina at jwatkins@csufresno.edu

Extended Library Hours!!!

As some of you may (or may not) know, ASI works closely with the library on a lot of different projects.  When we heard that people wanted extra library hours we looked into what we could do about it.  You asked, we provided!  The library is going to be open for extended hours throughout the rest of the semester.

So here is what happened.  In 1996, ASI created the Fresno State Library Endowment Fund (worth $20,000) to be used towards acquiring assets and Library operations.   With the annual interest generated by the endowment (about $2,200 a year), ASI is able to help keep the Library open on weekends.
The new hours begin Sunday, Nov. 29.  If you want any more information please visit: http://www.csufresno.edu/library/about/hours.shtml.  Otherwise, I have listed the hours for you below:

E-mail Virus Alert

A new, widespread e-mail virus is circulating on student, faculty and staff accounts at Fresno State and many other places. It has various Subject lines such as “You have received A Hallmark E-Card,” “A friend invited you to twitter” or “Jessica would like to be your friend.”These are not legitimate messages but rather, a virus that will infect your computer. Do not open the message or the attachment and do not forward it. Simply delete it from your Inbox. Do not open any attachment received from amazon.com, hallmark.com, hi5.com or twitter.com until you can be absolutely certain that the message and attachment are legitimate.

At the current time, the most common names for the virus attachments are “postcard.zip” and “invitation card.zip.”  State are working with our antivirus vendor to disinfect our system. We have taken steps to make sure no new messages come into our e-mail system and we’ve stopped outgoing messages from campus that contain these messages. But your computer can still become infected if you open one of the attachments.

If you already have opened the attachment, please send a message stating that to security@csufresno.edu. Do not forward the infected message. This new virus “harvests” all e-mail addresses from machines that open the attachment and then sends the virus to those addresses. Even if you did not open the attachment, your friends might have and you will see an increased amount of junk mail that will appear legitimate. Be cautious in opening attachments. Please be advised that this issue is not related to our Zimbra e-mail and calendaring system. It is infecting many e-mail systems.
