ASI Sends Student Leaders to Sacramento

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEApril 23, 2010ASI Sends Student Leaders to Sacramento (FRESNO, Calif.) – Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) is sending six students from California State University, Fresno to Sacramento on Friday, April 23, to participate in the annual California Higher Education Student Summit (CHESS). The annual conference, in its 15th year, provides student leaders from all CSU campuses with two days of educational sessions, development of leadership skills and an opportunity to implement those newly learned skills with the “CSU Student Advocacy Day at the State Capitol” which will be Monday, April 26.

It concludes Monday, April 26, with a 10 a.m. press conference on the steps of the State Capitol   followed by the Advocacy Day to advocate the importance of higher education. It is presented by the California State Student Association (CSSA) Board of Directors. The students are scheduled to meet with Senator Dave Cogdill, Senator Jeff Denham, Senator Roy Ashburn, Assemblywoman Connie Conway, Assemblyman Chuck DeVore, Assemblyman Mike Villines, Senator Sam Aanestad, Senator Abel Maldonado and Senate Majority Leader Dean Florez. ASI is a body of elected student representatives that encourages student involvement in campus-wide decisions and funds student programs. As the student government we ensure that students’ rights are protected and their voices are heard. EDITORS:  A press conference is scheduled for10 a.m. on Monday, April 26, on the north steps of the capitol. Photos from the 3-day event will be available afterward upon request.

Communications Assistant Position Available

Hello all!  I am graduating and there is an open position at ASI.  The communications assistant duties include:

1. Responsible for live-streaming bi-monthly ASI Senate meetings and managing video archives.
2. Maintain a basic understanding of ASI operations and attend to student needs.
3. Update the ASI Web site with current information and documents.
4. Assist in the development and distribution of ASI communications materials such as press releases and media advisories.
5. Develop and implement a distribution plan for ASI marketing materials.
6. Continually update ASI social networks including but not limited to Twitter and Facebook.
7. Keep current with emerging technologies and social media avenues to better enhance the communication conduits between ASI and the general student population.
8. Manage the Bulldog Blog by retrieving, writing, and editing content for a campus blog and bi-monthly mass e-mail for all students.
9. Serve as a student representative on Student Communications Committee and attend monthly meetings.
10. Other duties as assigned.

This is a great opportunity with room to gain a TON of experience with a fun organization.  It is a 20hr/wk position and is flexible with school schedules.  We are only taking applicants through the end of the week (Friday, April 23), so make sure to submit your resume to us ASAP!!!

Donate Blood…Save a Life!

Wednesday, April 28th and Thursday, April 29th, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at 5 campus locations.

 It’s as easy as taking one hour out of your day to donate blood.  One donation can save up to three lives!  The last blood drive of the spring semester will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, April 27th to 29th. The Tuesday drive will be held from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm in the Residence Dining Hall.  The drives on Wednesday and Thursday will be held from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the following locations: University Student Union (2 blood mobiles)Education BuildingMaple MallPeters Business BuildingEngineering East All donors will receive a free t-shirt and special donor coupons.  The campus blood drives are coordinated by the Richter Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning.  For questions regarding the blood drive please call 278-7079.

USU Recreation Center

USU Recreation Center is located downstairs in the University Student Union with bowling, billiards and video games to enjoy.

This semester we have a really great student special for bowling.  Two games of bowling, including shoes for $3.  This special is available Monday - Thursday from 9 a.m. - Noon. Regular price for students to bowl, is $2.00 per game plus $1.25 for shoes.

Also, play billiards for $4.25 per hour or XBOX for $3.50 per hour.

Lacrosse and Women’s Tennis Play at Home

Softball Hosts Weekend Series

As the Fresno State softball works toward their 22nd conference championship, come out and support sophomore Michelle Moses and the rest of the ‘Dogs at Bulldog Diamond this Friday (6 p.m.) and Saturday (1 & 3 p.m.) - April 23-24, 2010 as they battle the New Mexico State Aggies.  Admission is free with your student ID.

Important Changes to Fall 2010 Registration

To ensure that all students are able to select courses needed for progress toward their degree, all students will be LIMITED TO A MAXIMUM OF 16 UNITS during the early registration cycle from April 26 - July 30, 2010.  The 16 unit limit also includes units for courses that are Wait Listed!  Approval for excess units beyond the 16 units, will not be accepted during this time.  Beginning on Monday, August 9, the 16 unit restriction will be lifted and students will be able to register for additional courses.  Undergraduate students will be set for 18 units (unless their GPA allows for a higher limit); credential students can register for a maximum of 18 units; and graduate students are restricted to 16 units.

Vintage Days - Hang ‘10

Once again, Fresno State is ready to present Vintage Days 2010. This year’s Vintage Days is from April 15-18, and the theme is Hang ‘10. (Schedule of event and times listed below)Vintage Days is a four-day, student-planned celebration which attracts over 50,000 people from Fresno and the surrounding communities to the Fresno State campus. The annual spring event combines numerous social, cultural and recreational activities into a series of coordinated programs over an extended weekend.  Events and activities include: Boomtown Carnival - In a carnival-like atmosphere, campus student organizations sponsor food and game booths for the biggest fund-raiser on campus.Casino Night - An enormously successful Casino Night that happens in the lounge of the University Student Union Thursday April 15.  Several different gaming tables, including Black Jack and Poker, are offered.  In addition, there is a Karaoke competition, great raffle prizes given out all evening, and free refreshments.

Concerts - Vintage Days features live entertainment on one big stage near Boomtown South.  The musical entertainment includes a variety of genres guaranteed to amuse listeners of all ages.
Crafts Faire - The Vintage Days Crafts Faire was selected as one of the 200 Best Shows in the United States by Sunshine Artist magazine readers.  With over 140 craft booths featuring handmade crafts made by the vendor, there is certainly something for everyone to enjoy! The Crafts Faire is scheduled for Friday-Sunday, April 16-18.
Kid’s Zone - Vintage Days Kid’s Zone is on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. During the entire weekend, Kid’s Zone provides pony rides, a petting zoo, bounce houses, a giant slide, and free arts & crafts activities for all kids. For more information, visit csufresno.edu/vintagedays

I AM FRESNO STATE

The IAMFRESNOSTATE contest is a Fresno State school sponsored contest. Participants must submit a 25-second video the theme of the video is “ I AM FRESNO STATE”. The contest has 4 levels of prizes that come to the amount of $1,100. The deadline is Friday April 16 at 4 p.m. and it must submitted in DVD Format to Angela Byrns in the Keats Building. Attached are the flyer and the entry form for the contest. On May 6 at 2 p.m. at the Bucket there will be an awards party to announce the winners of the contest. As of this point there are no contestants so the chance to win first place is high! 

 If you are a true Fresno state fan, then submit a video stating why! The contest is open to Fresno State students, alumni, family, and friends. Once again the deadline is April 16 at 4 p.m. it can either by dropped off in person or mailed to Angela Byrns. More information and past videos are on iamfresnostate.com. It is free to enter.

Dance Team Auditions

The Fresno State Dance Team — completing its first year that included an impressive showing at the United Spirit Association’s Collegiate Cheer and Dance Nationals – will hold auditions for the 2010-11 squad on Saturday, April 10, and Sunday, April 11. Registration begins at 9 a.m. at California State University, Fresno’s North Gym located next to the Bulldog Diamond softball field (south from Barstow).  The two step process includes a clinic from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday ending with initial selections for the call back sessions which are on Sunday, April 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Final selections will be announced at the end of the second day.   Participants must complete an application, available on the band’s Web site. Diversity Workshop

Three Diversity Workshops presented by the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) at California State University, Fresno in April and May will explore prejudice reduction. The 2010 Welcoming Diversity Workshops will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on April 10, 14 and May 1. 

The April 10 workshop will be held in the University Center 202, April 14 in the California Agricultural Technology Institute on the corner of Barstow and Chestnut avenues and May 1 will be in the University Center 202.

Generation Green

Fresno State students have the opportunity to make a big impact on our community this month!  Saturday, April 24, from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m., Fresno State volunteers are needed to volunteer for Generation Green!  Generation Green is a one-day service event to celebrate Earth Day.

 

Fresno State students will be able to work on one of two projects that will have a long-lasting impact on our community.  Trail building on the McKenzie Table Mountain Preserve will engage students in a project that will build hiking trails that will be present for years to come.  Approximately 50 volunteers will be needed for this project.  A painting project with Rotary Storyland will help to beautify the park and create lasting memories for children for years to come.  Thirty volunteers will be needed for the painting project.

 

Volunteers may participate individually or as a group. Deadline for registration is Wednesday, April 21.

All volunteers must pre-register, sign waiver forms, and provide their own transportation.
