Student body president opposes CSU fee increase

Opposes fee increase

Posted at 12:35 AM on Friday, Jun. 18, 2010

The Fresno Bee

Today the California State University Board of Trustees is scheduled to vote on another fee increase. Last year students saw their fees increase 32% and this time trustees are proposing a 5% to 10% increase.

With the economic crisis taking a toll on our state, we look to California’s leadership more than ever, to refocus on priorities and pass a budget that provides adequate funding for our state’s educational system.

Pricing students out of an education only hinders economic growth. A report conducted by the California State University system, and covered in The Bee, shows that for every dollar California invests in higher education, the state’s economy sees a return of $5.43.

With this kind of return on investment we must support our university systems and the students who work hard to fulfill their part by becoming productive members of society.

Now more than ever, we as citizens must take action and press our leadership to do their jobs and get this doneI urge everyone to contact their state representatives and members of the CSU Board of Trustees today and tell them to keep the promise of an affordable education.
Pedro Ramirez

Associated Students president

California State University, Fresno

ASI CALL TO ACTION!

In a few hours the CSU Board of Trustees will be voting on a potential fee increase anywhere from 5%-10% for the fall 2010 semester. This is in addition to the 32% fee increase established in 2009. Students and supporters of higher education, we need to act NOW and advocate for access to an affordable and quality higher education. Please join ASI President, Pedro Ramirez in contacting CSU Trustees, to remind them of their promise of renewed commitment to higher education.
